Marie Z. Chino
Acknowledged as one of the most important Acoma potters of the last century, Marie Z. Chino is part of a group of women artisans known as “The Four Matriarchs.” Credited with reviving the ancient Mimbres-style pottery, these women have shaped and defined the craft in modern times. Chino’s pottery often includes abstract design elements and traditional symbols, such as Tularosa swirls, lightning bolts, and Mimbres animals. Her work is included in collections at the Holmes Museum of Anthropology, the National Museum of the American Indian, and the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, D.C.
