Colibri
Colibri is a shop in Guatemala's beautiful Colonial town of Antigua. It was founded by Connecticut native Vey Smithers in 1984. Vey grew up visiting her mother's house in Antigua, so she knew the town and the people well. Colibri sells a range of exquisitely handmade Guatemalan crafts and textiles based on what weavers are accustomed to producing for themsleves with their technical knowledge, local designs, colors, and shapes. Colibri started as a small group of weavers in the Solola area, most of whom were widows due to the violence of Guatemala's civil war. Now Colibri provides a steady income to more than 500 Mayan women in 25 small villages throughout Guatemala, all under the direction of Vey’s contemporary aesthetic.
